Bissland, Director, TAFE School of Business and eCommerce, and her
staff at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, is undertaking
research into the above topic in 2001-2002. The research is being
undertaken for the National Research and Evaluation Committee (NREC),
and managed by the National Centre for Vocational Education and
Research (NCVER).
In brief, the objectives of the project are as follows:
- to identify the existing and potential connection between e-business
and on-line learning and opportunities for applying e-business
solutions to the on-line VET environment.
- to identify examples of good practice in applying e-business
to on-line learning.
- to identify benefits, barriers, risks and other factors impacting
on the application of e-business principles and processes to on-line
learning.
The major research questions of this study are:
- What are the new and emerging e-business models and solutions
that could be enhance the delivery of, enrolment in and the management
of on-line learning systems in VET in Australia?
- What educational, organisational, cultural and technological
factors could influence the development of e-business models for
on-line learning systems in VET?
- What planning strategies will enable a VET organization to apply
an e-business solution to the on-line learning environment, based
on the experiences of other organizations?
The study will
- delineate a range of effective e-business models for on-line
learning systems that may be appropriate for the Australian VET
sector, based on international and national research
- provide a summary of the business, educational and organisational
assumptions and technological developments that can influence
new e-business models for on-line learning systems in VET.
Hence, major contributions of the study will be as follows:
- VET policy makers, strategic planners and business development
planners will be informed about the key components of effective
e-business models for on-line learning systems
- the e-business models identified by this study could provide
critical guidance for decision makers considering investment in
on-line learning systems in VET
- potentially, VET students could benefit from the development
of open learning systems that are supported by sustainable e-business
models
- technology manufacturers and suppliers could benefit from a
better understanding of how e-business technology can integrate
back office and front office processes in VET organisations.
